Validating BuiltIn Slot Type

Hi - How do you validate a builtin slot type? I am using AMAZON.US_CITY and while testing the bot, I can enter foobar and conversation continues to prompt me for the next slot. There is a provision for lambda validation code hook butI need more direction as to validating that what user enters is indeed a us city. Thanks!
